A LARGE (72 CM) AND IMPRESSIVE GILT-LACQUER WOOD FIGURE OF AMIDA NYORAI ON A LOTUS THRONE, 18TH CENTURY Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) This finely crafted, large figure is constructed using the yosegi-zukuri technique. Amida Nyorai is seated in dhyanasana, with hands folded in the mida no join above the lap—an iconic variation of the dhyana mudra typically associated with Japanese representations of Amida. The figure is supported by an elaborate lotus base, elevated above a curled lotus leaf, and stands on a tiered platform adorned with decorative cartouches and a globular mid-section. Amida is draped in a loose robe, which falls in graceful folds around the body and opens at the chest. The serene face features a calm expression, with downcast eyes inlaid with crystal. Gently arched brows are centered by a glass byakugo (urna), while the hair is arranged in tight curls and surmounted by a domed ushnisha, which features an additional red glass-inlaid eye. The aureole, carved separately, is adorned with a central lotus blossom and radiating beams of light symbolizing light emanating from Amida’s head.
