A VERY LARGE (136 CM) AND IMPRESSIVE GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF SHO-KANNON, EARLY EDO PERIOD Japan, 17th-18th century, early Edo period (1615-1868) Superbly carved standing in samabhanga with the right hand held in seppo-in (vitarka mudra), wearing loose-fitting robes cascading in finely carved folds and a billowing scarf draped over the arms, the face with a serene expression, the hair pulled up into a high chignon behind the openworked gilt-metal foliate crown. The deity stands atop a lotus dais raised on an elaborate tiered octagonal base with a furled lotus leaf, petal band, openworked panels with floral scroll decoration, and neatly incised gilt-metal fittings.
