A GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF MIROKU BOSATSU, 17TH-18TH CENTURY Japan, 17th-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of yosegi (joined) construction, finely carved seated in dhyanasana with the hands lowered in jo-in, wearing a voluminous robe cascading in graceful folds and richly decorated in gold lacquer with dragons, lotus blossoms, and brocade patterns. The serene face with heavy-lidded eyes inlaid in crystal with painted pupils and full bow-shaped lips, below the crystal-inlaid byakugo (urna), flanked by pierced pendulous lobes, the hair pulled up into a high chignon of elegantly falling looped tresses above a plain tiara. The Future Buddha sits atop a circular lotus throne raised on a flat octagonal base supported by a struggling beast on an elaborate octagonal tiered plinth with alternating shippo pattern, furled lotus leaves, and overlapping lotus petals, the larger of which terminate in trefoils, above short foliate feet with similarly shaped gilt-metal fittings neatly incised with foliate designs on a ring-punched ground, each below a gilt-metal fitting of rectangular shape and similar design. EUR 7,900 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Compare a related polychrome hinoki wood figure of a bodhisattva, dated early Edo period, 17th century, 28.5 cm high, lacking the throne and plinth of the present lot, at Christie’s, 22 June 2016, Paris, lot 117 (sold for EUR 12,500 or approx. EUR 15,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
