A LARGE (69 CM) AND IMPRESSIVE GILT-LACQUER FIGURE OF SEISHI BOSATSU, EARLY EDO PERIOD Japan, 17th-18th century, early Edo period (1615-1868) Of yosegi-zukuri construction, intricately carved in a seated position with the right knee raised, and the hands folded before the chest in a diminutive gesture. The face is round, with downcast eyes beneath gently arched brows, centered by a crystal-inlaid byakugo (urna), a slender nose, and full lips. The ears are adorned with pierced pendulous earlobes. The hair is combed into a tall chignon, with a golden water jar representing wisdom at its center, all encircled by a circular mandorla. Seishi Bosatsu sits atop a separately carved lotus pedestal, which rests on openwork clouds emanating from a tiered hexagonal stand. The base is embellished with floral panels and lobed cartouches, enclosing dragons and other mythical creatures, adding to the figure's magnificence. HEIGHT 32 cm (figure), HEIGHT 69 cm (total) This elegant depiction of Seishi Bosatsu, the attendant bodhisattva of Amida, is designed to assist in guiding the faithful to the Western Paradise. Traditionally, Seishi Bosatsu would be positioned to the left of Amida in a balanced triad, with Kannon on the right. In this arrangement, Seishi and Kannon both support Amida in welcoming souls and guiding them to salvation.
