A FINE SHIBUICHI FUCHI AND KASHIRA WITH SHOJO AND SAKE JAR Unsigned Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The shibuichi fuchi worked in gold, suaka, and shakudo takazogan and hirazogan to depict a drunken shojo holding a long ladle and gazing up, with a saucer to the reverse. The kashira decorated with a sake jar rendered in shakudo, gold, and silver takazogan and carved lines evoking the liquid. HEIGHT 3.5 cm WEIGHT 38.5 g With a padded wood storage box (tomobako). A Shojo is a Japanese sea spirit with similarities to a ghost but differing from the latter in the fact that Shojo are tangible. It enjoys drinking alcohol, especially sake. Legend has it that workers at breweries in Japan have seen Shojo lurking about after indulging in their products.
