SAWAKI AKITATSU HOGEN: A VERY FINE SHIBUICHI TSUBA WITH PEONIES AND SHISHI By Sawaki Akitatsu (active 1863-1864), signed Akitatsu Hogen with kakihan Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of aorigata form, with one kozuka hitsu ana, the nakago ana with suaka sekigane, the shibuichi migakiji (polished) ground detailed in gold and iro-e takazogan and hirazogan featuring a spray of peonies to one side and a shishi carved in katakiribori to the reverse beside a suaka hirazogan seal mark. Signed to one side AKITATSU HOGEN with kao. HEIGHT 6.2 cm, LENGTH 5.4 cm, 2.3 cm (the nakago), THICKNESS 0.3 cm (the mimi), 0.4 cm (the seppa-dai) WEIGHT 91.9 g Akitatsu Hogen (active 1863-1864), is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 28 (H 00075.0). He was the student of Haruaki Hogen and specialized in peony flower designs, and named Ichibosai (‘one peony man’) by Yamashina Kikumaro.
