MASAYOSHI: AN IWAMA SCHOOL IRON TSUBA WITH SHAKA NYORAI IN MEDITATION By Masayoshi, signed Masayoshi 政蘆 Japan, Iwama school, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of kakumarugata form, with a kozuka hitsu-ana. Finely worked in shibuichi, gold, and silver takazogan and intricately carved in shishiaibori and kebori to depict Buddha Shakyamuni seated in a cave near a waterfall, wearing a neatly incised robe loosely draped over his right shoulder, his neatly detailed face with a meditative expression, the hair arranged in tight curls, the beard similarly carved, the reverse with a silver-inlaid full moon above thick, swirling clouds. The recto signed MASAYOSHI. HEIGHT 6.8 cm, LENGTH 6 cm WEIGHT 97 g Iwama Masayoshi (1764-1837) is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 1007 (H 04907.0). He worked in Edo and was a student of Hamano Naoyuki, Nobuyuki and Toshiyuki.
