TOMOTSUNE: A SHAKUDO TSUBA WITH OX AND HERD BOY By Tomotsune, signed Tomotsune Japan, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of marugata form, with one kogai and kozuka hitsu ana, and uchikaeshi (raised) mimi, the shakudo migakiji (polished) finely chiseled in katakiribori and kebori to depict a young herd boy and ox resting beside a stream while playing the flute, the scene wrapping around the other side. Signed TOMOTSUNE. HEIGHT 7.4 cm, LENGTH 7.4 cm, 2.8 cm (the nakago), THICKNESS 0.4 cm (the mimi), 0.4 cm (the seppa-dai) WEIGHT 129.7 g There are three Tomotsune listed in the Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 2008 (H 10156.0-H 10158.0).
