NATSUO: A SHIBUICHI TSUBA After Kano Natsuo (1828-1898), inscribed Natsuo with kakihan Japan, Natsuo School, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) to Meiji period (1868-1912) Of marugata form, with a kozuka and kogai hitsu-ana, the nakago-ana fitted with copper sekigane. The finely polished shibuichi migakiji ground is worked in katakiribori and kebori, with details inlaid in gold and silver hirazogan, depicting Benkei in the celebrated scroll-reading scene from the Kanjincho legend, shown beneath the spreading branches of a pine. The reverse is engraved with a tranquil river flowing between rockwork. Signed to one side NATSUO and with the artist’s kakihan. HEIGHT 7.6 cm, LENGTH 7.4 cm, 2.7 cm (the nakago), THICKNESS 0.4 cm (the mimi), 0.5 cm (the seppa-dai) WEIGHT 156.9 g Kano Natsuo (1828-1898) is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, pp. 1371-1372, no. H 06974.0. Born to a rice merchant in Yanagiba Oike, Kyoto, he was adopted at the age of seven by Jisuke Kano, a sword merchant, through whom he developed an early fascination with sword fittings and began teaching himself to carve by studying and imitating tsuba. Natsuo’s immense reputation and enduring influence inspired numerous later artists and followers to produce works in his manner and bearing his signature.
