TSUCHIYA YASUCHIKA VI: A FINE IRON TSUBA DEPICTING ARIWARA NO NARIHIRA By Tsuchiya Yasuchika VI (died 1861), signed Sekienshi Hogen Yasuchika with kakihan Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of nagamarugata form, with one kozuka hitsu ana, the nakago ana with copper sekigane, finely worked in iro-e takazogan, gold nunomezogan, as well as in katakiribori, to depict Ariwara no Narihira on horseback next to his attendant performing a Shinto purification ritual, with clouds in the distance. The reverse with a second attendant holding a parasol while tying his sandals. Signed to one side SEKIENSHI HOGEN YASUCHIKA with kakihan, the reverse inscribed ‘Buko Sodetome ura no atari nite kore wo kizamu [This is made by the Sodetome Bay, in Edo, Musashi Province]’. HEIGHT 7.5 cm, LENGTH 7.2 cm, 2.3 cm (the nakago), WIDTH 0.3 cm (the mimi), 0.3 cm (the seppa-dai) WEIGHT 117 g Tsuchiya Yasuchika VI (died 1861) is listed in the Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 2187-2188 (H 11109.0). He was the first son of Kunichika, the fifth Yasuchika. He was a prolific artist with many examples of his work being exported to the West. Yasuchika VI is said to be the student of his father, Hagiya Katsuhira, and Tanaka Kiyotoshi. Museum comparison: Compare a related earlier iron tsuba with a shrine attendant, by Tsuchiya Yasuchika, dated late 18th to early 19th century, in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, accession number 11.11981.
