SUGIURA JOI: A SUAKA TSUBA WITH CHOKARO SENNIN By Sugiura Joi, with seal Nagaharu Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of marugata form, with one kogai and kozuka hitsu ana, the kozuka hitsu ana plugged in shakudo with a silver loop, the mimi lined in shakudo, with ishimeji ground, finely inlaid in gold and shakudo takazogan and hirazogan as well as carved in shishiaibori and katakiribori, featuring Chokaro sennin releasing his horse from a hyotan. The reverse with the seal NAGAHARU. HEIGHT 7.4 cm, LENGTH 7.1 cm, 2.7 cm (the nakago), THICKNESS 0.5 cm (the mimi), 0.5 cm (the seppa-dai) WEIGHT 165.7 g Sugiura Joi (1701-1761), also known as Issando Joi, is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 450-451 (H 02135.0). The famous founder of the artist family and school of Joi, he was a pupil of Nara Toshinaga I. Together with Toshinaga, Masayuki, and Yasuchika, he is regarded to be one of the Four Great Nara Masters. Museum comparison: Compare a related Joi style suaka tsuba with a travelling showman, dated 19th century, 7.1 cm tall, in the Ashmolean Museum, accession number EAX.10942. Compare a related Joi style shibuichi tsuba with the Chinese sage Bukan Zenji, dated probably 19th century, 7 cm tall, in the Ashmolean Museum, accession number EAX.10939.
