SUGIURA JOI: A SHIBUICHI TSUBA WITH RAKAN HANDAKA SONJA School of Sugiura Joi (1701-1761), signed Issando Joi Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of nagamarugata form, slightly raised mimi, a kozuka hitsu ana, the nakago ana with suaka and silver sekigane, the migakiji (polished) ground carved in shishiaibori, kebori, and katakiribori with gold and silver takazogan, featuring to one side Handaka Sonja raising his bowl to release a dragon from his bowl. The reverse depicting the dragon floating above clouds in the distance. Signed to one side ISSANDO JOI. HEIGHT 7.1 cm, LENGTH 6.5 cm, 2.7 cm (the nakago), THICKNESS 0.5 cm (the mimi), 0.4 cm (the seppa-dai) WEIGHT 144.1 g Sugiura Joi (1701-1761), also known as Issando Joi, is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 450-451 (H 02135.0). The famous founder of the artist family and school of Joi, he was a pupil of Nara Toshinaga I. Together with Toshinaga, Masayuki, and Yasuchika, he is regarded to be one of the Four Great Nara Masters.
