HIROYUKI: A FINE SHAKUDO TSUBA WITH GEESE FLYING AT NIGHT By Chihakuken Hiroyuki (active c. 1800), signed Chihakuken Japan, c. 1800, Edo period (1615-1868) Of nademarugata form, with one kozuka and kogai hitsu ana, the shakudo migakiji ground detailed in sukashi and with gold and copper takazogan to depict a pair of geese flying above a river and below the gold moon. Signed CHIHAKUKEN. HEIGHT 6.3 cm, LENGTH 5.8 cm WEIGHT 84 g Chihakuken Hiroyuki is listed in Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p.299 (H 01460.0). He was a student of the Uchikoshi school. Haynes mentions a similar shibuichi tsuba inlaid in gold, silver, and shakudo with two storks and reeds by a stream, formerly in the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number M485—1916. Auction comparison: Compare a related tsuba by the Ishiguro school, attributed to Masatsune II, was sold by Bonhams, Fine Japanese Works of Art, 19 March 2008, New York, lot 5156 (sold for 3,000 USD).
