GOTO TAIJO: A FINE SHAKUDO NANAKO TSUBA WITH A HORSE DRAWN CHARIOT By Goto Taijo (1631-1701), signed Goto Taijo and kao Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of nagamarugata form, with kozuka and kogai hitsu ana, worked on a shakudo nanako ground with gold and iro-e takazogan to depict Shokatsuryo or Gomo (Zhuge Liang or Wu Meng) riding a chariot accompanied by his attendant holding a parasol below a pine. The reverse with a kneeling figure by a stream. Signed GOTO TAIJO and kao. HEIGHT 7.4 cm, LENGTH 6.9 cm WEIGHT 131.7 g Goto Taijo is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 1843-1844 (H 09247.0). He was the fifth son of Goto Sokujo and founder of the Jizaemon Goto sideline.
