A TETSUGENDO SCHOOL IRON TSUBA WITH COURTIERS CARRYING AN EMA Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of marugata form, with one kozuka hitsu ana, rendered in marubori (round carving) and inlaid in gold, silver, and copper takazogan, hirazogan, and nunomezogan, featuring two courtiers carrying an ema (votive tablet) towards a torii of a temple, the front of the ema detailed with a horse, and the back inscribed ‘hokake gohozen (Reverently dedicated for display before the honored shrine)’ and signed ‘Tosa Mitsunobu hitsu (painted by Tosa Mitsunobu)’. The torii with a hachimangu plaque. HEIGHT 7.5 cm, LENGTH 7.2 cm, 2.7 cm (the nakago), THICKNESS 0.5 cm (the mimi), 0.5 cm (the seppa-dai) WEIGHT 107 g Tosa Mitsunobu (1434-1525) was a Japanese painter and the founder of the Tosa school of Japanese painting. Born into a family that had traditionally served as painters to the Imperial court, he was head of the court painting bureau from 1493 to 1496. In 1518, he was appointed chief artist to the Ashikaga shogunates. Ema (picture-horse) are small wooden votive plaques, common to Japan, in which Shinto and Buddhist worshippers write prayers or wishes. These plaques are left hanging up at the shrine, where the kami (spirits or gods) are believed to receive them.
