TSUNEMASA AND YASUYUKI: AN IRON TSUBA WITH BILLOWING WAVES, WITH A NBTHK HOZON CERTIFICATE By Bamen Tsunemasa (1740-1815) and Bosoken Hamano Yasuyuki (1763-1836), signed Bamen Tsunemasa with kao and Bosoken Yasuyuki with seal Yasuyuki Japan, Edo (Tokyo), late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The tsuba is accompanied by an NBTHK Hozon [Worthy of Preservation] certificate, no. 4024641, dated 19 June Reiwa 7 [2025], with a photo of the tsuba and the seal of the NBTHK. Of kawarigata form, with a kogai and kozuka hitsu ana, the nakago with suaka sekigane, finely worked in marubori (round carving) and yo-sukashi to form overlapping billowing waves. Signed to one side BAMEN TSUNEMASA with kao. The reverse signed BOSOKEN YASUYUKI with seal YASUYUKI. HEIGHT 7.2 cm, LENGTH 6.9 cm, 2.6 cm (the nakago), THICKNESS 0.3 cm (the mimi), 0.4 cm (the seppa-dai) WEIGHT 75.8 g With a padded storage box, inscribed to the exterior of the cover ‘collaboration of Bamen and Hozui, tsuba’, and to the interior ‘Bamen Tsunemasa kao, Bosoken Hozui’ followed by a description of the tsuba, and attested in 1949, with two signatures and a seal of the certifiers. Tsunemasa Bamen (1740-1815) is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 2113 (H 10825.0). He was born in Echizen Province and the student of Kikuchi Tsunekatsu. Yasuyuki Bosoken (1763-1836) is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 2224-2225 (H 11367.0). He was the student of Hamano Naoyuki and married his daughter. He later became a student of the first Hamano Noriyuki
