KATSURANO SEKIBUN: A SHONAI SCHOOL IRON TSUBA WITH CRANE AND MINOGAME By Katsurano Sekibun, signed Sekibun Rojin Japan, dated 1856, Edo period (1615-1868) Of kakumarugata form, with one kogai and one kozuka hitsu-ana, the nakago-ana fitted with suaka sekigane. The iron plate is finely worked in takabori, katakiribori, and kebori, with gold, silver, and copper takazogan, depicting a crane in flight above turbulent waves. The reverse is decorated with a vigorously rendered minogame emerging amid swirling water. Signed to one side Ansei san tatsu hachi gatsu SEKIBUN ROJIN [in August of the third year of Ansei (1856), Sekibun Rojin]. HEIGHT 6.4 cm, LENGTH 6.3 cm, 2.5 cm (the nakago), THICKNESS 0.2 cm (the mimi), 0.3 cm (the seppa-dai) WEIGHT 61.1 g Katsurano Sekibun I (1790-1872) is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 1624 (H 08118.0). He was adopted by the Hamano family of Kyoto, studied in the Hamano school and learned both iron and soft metal plate techniques. In 1824, he moved to Shonai and was a very versatile artist that adopted many styles.
