A KATANA IN KOSHIRAE Japan, 14th century, Muromachi period (1338-1573) The blade: Sugata (shape): shinogi zukuri, iori mune, torii-zori, chu-kissaki Hamon (temper line): sugu and minor notare with nie-deki and sunagashi Hada (forging grain pattern): itame and mokume Nakago (tang): ubu (not shortenend), kiri-jiri, the yasurime is kiri, two mekugi ana The mounting: Habaki (blade collar): gold on copper with diagonal file marks and dew drops Tsuba (sword guard): of nagamarugata form, a kogai and kozuka hitsu ana, iron ground with takabori and kebori peach-form leaf, signed Echizen ju Kinai Fuchi-kashira (handle fittings): shakudo nanako with gold takazogan gourd vines and squirrel and fan with aoi tendrils Tsuka (handle): samegawa (raysking), black tsuka-ito, two suaka, shibuichi, and gold takazogan menuki in the form of kabuto and other parts of the armor Saya (sheath): red and black mottled lacquer NAGASA 69.3 cm (blade length), SORI 1.3cm (curvature) LENGTH 88.3 cm (blade and tang), 96.7 cm (koshirae)
