MYOCHIN MUNEHARU: A FINE MYOCHIN SCHOOL LACQUERED IRON MENPO By Myochin Muneharu, signed Doshu Myochin Muneharu saku Japan, Tosa Province (Kochi), c. 1850, late Edo period Finely cast and forged in five sections with a removable nose plate secured by turning pins, cast with flared nostrils and an open mouth in a wide smile, designed with deeply embossed wrinkles, the chin with ase-nagashi, and the cheeks with loop cord attachments, all fitted with a five-lame yodarekake with orange lacing. Signed to the underside Doshu Myochin Muneharu saku [Made by Myochin Muneharu, Tosa Province]. HEIGHT 25.5 cm WEIGHT 458 g The artist is recorded in the Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists (p. 1201, H06049.0). Myochin Muneharu is noted for producing a celebrated suit of armor presented as a diplomatic gift from a Tokugawa shogun to Queen Victoria.
