A RARE LACQUERED IRON MOMONARI KABUTO Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The peach-shaped helmet lacquered black with a prominent central ridge, the tosei mabisashi (concave peak) fitted with a kuwagata dai decorated with a kiku (chrysanthemum) blossom to the center, below scrolling clouds, flanked by upturned fukigaeshi lined with fukurin and adorned with a mon enclosing the stylized character 太, all above the brown-lacquered five lame shikoro. Inscriptions: To the awasebako, inscribed 露橋町帳簿入Tsuyuhashi-machi Choboire [A ledger storage box, Tsuyuhashi town]. HEIGHT 30 cm With an old inscribed wood awasebako.
