A FINE INCOMPLETE CUIRASS ARMOR AND SUJIBACHI KABUTO Japan, 17th-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Comprising lacquered-iron elements predominantly laced in green, mounted on gold brocade, and embellished with intricate gilt-metal kanamono decorated with kiku (chrysanthemum) motifs. The armor comprises: Kabuto (Helmet): A russet-iron thirty-two-plate sujibachi kabuto with a five-tiered chrysanthemum-form tehen kanamono, the lowest tier of copper finely incised with scrolling foliage and pierced with inome (boar's-eye) motifs. The mabisashi and fukigaeshi with gilded copper rims (so-fukurin) neatly engraved with foliate scrolls, the upturned fukigaeshi applied with printed leather and centered by a gilt-metal maru ni chigai-masu (crossed measuring boxes) mon, flanked by kiku-form studs and laced with an additional lame, all above the five-lame jikoro. Do (Cuirass): A lacquered-iron nimai do with three sections of three-lame kusazuri. Haidate (Thigh Guards): A pair of red-lacquered haidate laced in gold. Kote (Armored Sleeves) and Tekko (Gauntlets): A pair of silver-damascened iron and kusari (chain mail) kote and tekko, the sleeves and gauntlets interspersed with foliate medallions. Suneate (Shin Guards): A pair of gilt-iron and kusari (chain mail) suneate.
