† A FINE GOMAI-DO GUSOKU (FIVE-PIECE CUIRASS ARMOR) AND SUJIBACHI KABUTO Japan, 17th-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The iron components predominantly laced in blue, mounted on gold and brown brocade, and fitted with intricate kanamono with foliate design. The armor comprises: Kabuto (Helmet): A russet-iron twenty-four-plate sujibachi kabuto with a five-tiered chrysanthemum-form tehen kanamono, the lowest tier incised with scrolling foliage and pierced with an inome (boar’s eye) design, fitted with a kiku-form agemaki-no-kan at the back, the mabisashi of typical form and applied with a gilt-metal maedate in the form of stylized horns, flanked by upturned fukigaeshi applied with printed leather and centered by a metal mon in the form of three arrow fletchings within a circle, flanked by studs, and laced with an additional lame, all above the four-lame jikoro. Menpo (Mask): An iron menpo with a removable nose plate secured by turning pins, cast with flared nostrils and an open mouth revealing teeth, below a horse-hair mustache, designed with deeply embossed wrinkles, the chin with an ase-nagashi ringed by a kiku medallion, and the cheeks with bent anchoring posts borne on foliate grommets, all fitted with a three-lame yodarekake. Do (Chest Plate): A gomai-do with seven sections of five-lame kusazuri, the front and the back with gilt-metal foliate-form age’maki (decorative tassels), the latter borne on a reticulated gilt-metal plaque bearing chrysanthemum bosses on scrolling vines. Sode (Shoulder Guard): A pair of six-lame sode laced with blue and beige cords. Haidate (Thigh Guard): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) haidate applied with stylized foliate blossoms to the lower edge. Kote (Armored Sleeves) and Tekko (Gauntlets): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) kote and tekko. Suneate (Shin Guards): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) suneate. With an inscribed battle folding-fan.
