OTANI HARUHIKO: A FINE REPOUSSÉ SILVER TRAY WITH SHROUDED FEMALE FIGURES Otani Haruhiko (1906–1981), signed and sealed to the tomobako Japan, 20th century, Showa period (1926–1989) Rectangular in form with rounded corners and a gently raised rim, the interior finely hammered and engraved to depict two partially draped female figures in dynamic movement, running in opposite directions while turning their heads toward one another. Their flowing hair and translucent veils create a sense of movement and lightness, with the delicate drapery partially revealing the contours of their bodies. The figures are accented with subtle golden tones against a finely punched ground, while the surrounding rim is decorated with a precisely engraved interlaced ribbon motif. Haruhiko Otani (1906–1981) was a distinguished Japanese metalwork artist renowned for his mastery of repoussé and hammering techniques. He studied metal design and decorative hammering at the Tokyo Fine Arts School under Katsura Mitsuharu and later became a regular participant in major national exhibitions, including Hoshukuten, Shin-Bunten, and Nitten. His works combine traditional Japanese metalworking techniques with a refined modern aesthetic, at times incorporating influences from European Art Nouveau, and are admired for their sculptural quality and technical sophistication.
