HASUDA SHUGORO: A BRONZE SUIBAN By Hasuda Shugoro (1915-2010), signed Shu Japan, 1974, Showa period (1926-1989) The shallow basin with low rounded walls, incised at the center with a large ring partially decorated with vertical lines, the exterior with a protruding flat lip in the round, save for three punctuated notches. The base cast with a seal-type signature SHU. Inscriptions: To the underside, in gilt, a commemorative inscription for the 25th anniversary of Denso Industries Ltd. WIDTH 35.5 cm With a signed and inscribed wood tomobako (storage box) and a Japanese pamphlet with the biography of the artist. A suiban (water tray) is a shallow, watertight ceramic, metal, or stone tray used primarily for displaying suiseki (viewing stones), kusamono (accent plants), or for ikebana (flower arranging). Originating in Japan, these shallow containers, which can be glazed, unglazed, or made of bronze (doban), hold sand, gravel, or water to create natural landscapes. Hasuda Shugoro (1915-2010) was a prominent Japanese sculptor. He studied at the Tokyo School of Art, graduating in 1938. His work gained recognition at the 5th Nitten exhibition in 1949, and he received Nitten’s Hokuto prize in 1953. Shugoro co-founded the Creative Crafts Association in 1961 and became an assistant professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts. His sculptures, known for their architectural form, were selected as official gifts for the prime minister of West Germany and the president of Mexico. Shugoro received prestigious awards, including the Mombudaijinsho in 1959 and the Japanese Order of Cultural Merit in 1991. His works are held in various notable collections.
