KAWAKAMI EIZAN: A FINE RED-PATINATED BRONZE AND SILVER ARCHAISTIC GU-STYLE VASE By Kawakami Eizan, sealed Eizan Japan, 20th century, Taisho (1912-1926) to Showa era (1926-1989) Finely cast and worked in the form of an archaistic Chinese gu, the slender cylindrical body boldly hammered with horizontal striations and supported on a short, slightly splayed foot. The globular central section is decorated in high relief with blossoming flowerheads amid scrolling foliate tendrils, while the neck rises to a widely flared mouth fitted with a silver rim. The vessel contains a separately cast inner vase fitted with two hinged loop handles. The exterior is finished with a rich reddish-brown patina, deliberately varied with darker areas, simulated corrosion, and green encrustations to evoke the aged surface of an ancient Chinese ritual bronze. The interior is similarly dark-patinated with red accents. The underside sealed EIZAN. HEIGHT 37.2 cm WEIGHT 1,677 g With the original wood storage box (tomobako), signed and sealed by the artist Gu vessels were sacrificial wine containers used in ritual ceremonies during China’s Shang dynasty.
