KASHIMA KAZUO: A FINE GOLD- AND SILVER-INLAID BRONZE ‘WIND-PATTERNED’ BASIN By Kashima Kazuo (b. 1958), sealed by the artist Japan, Heisei period (1989-2019) Superbly hammered, with deep, slightly concave sides supported on a flat base and rising to a broad circular mouth with a thin, straight rim. The exterior finished with a finely silver-patinated surface and delicately inlaid in gold and silver using the nonume-zogan technique, to form a swirling diagonal composition of finely braided lines and broader, irregular bands in high relief. The interior coated with a subtle golden finish. The underside bearing the artist’s seal in gold script. HEIGHT 15.3 cm, DIAMETER 17.5 cm With the original wood storage box (tomobako), signed and sealed by the artist. Kashima Kazuo (b. 1958) is the fifth-generation head of the Kashima family lineage. Born as the second son of the Japanese-style painter Hiroyuki Hiraide, he received direct training from his grandfather, the celebrated metalwork artist Kashima Ikkoku (1898–1996), designated a Living National Treasure in 1979 and the fourth-generation head of the family. Kashima Kazuo continues and develops the Kashima tradition through his own artistic practice and is widely regarded as one of the leading contemporary metal artists in Japan. He played a central role in the 2020 Takaoka Art Museum exhibition on contemporary metal art, held at the National Museum of Modern Art, and in recent years he also has presented exhibitions and conducted workshops internationally, including in the United States and China.
