HANNYA KANKEI: A LARGE PATINATED BRONZE FLOWER VASE By Hannya Kankei (b. 1933), sealed Kankei 勘溪 Japan, 20th century, Showa period (1926-1989) Masterfully cast, the flattened globular body subtly curving toward a short, straight foot, and rising through sloping shoulders to a subtly tapered neck with a projecting rim. The surface is patinated in a deep dark brown tone, enlivened by subtle flame-like waves of dark ochre and purplish hues, which impart a pronounced sense of movement and a fluid material quality to the vessel. The underside sealed within an oval reserve KANKEI. WEIGHT 4,378 g HEIGHT 20.5 cm, DIAMETER 28.5 cm With the original wood storage box (tomobako), inscribed to the top of the cover Chudo kabin Kankei 鋳銅、花瓶、勘溪 [cast bronze flower vessel, Kankei] and sealed Kankei 勘溪 Hannya Kankei, born in 1933 into a family of metal artisans, is the fourth-generation head of the Hannya Foundry in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, where he began his apprenticeship in 1950 under his father and developed a particular expertise in sahari, an alloy of copper and zinc. His work has since received numerous awards both in Japan and abroad, as well as widespread recognition.
