YAMAMOTO JUNMIN: A FINE BRONZE VASE WITH POLYCHROME LACQUER BOSSES By Yamamoto Junmin (1882-1962), signed Junmin Japan, 20th century, early Showa period (1926-1989) Finely cast, the globular body gently tapering toward a short, straight foot and rising to a waisted neck with a flared rim. The high, rounded shoulders encircled by two pairs of raised bands, between which a group of seven domed knobs is arranged, each decorated with multi-colored layered lacquer. The recessed base signed JUNMIN. HEIGHT 23.6 cm With the original wood storage box (tomobako), signed and sealed by the artist. Yamamoto Junmin (1882-1962) studied the metal arts under Katori Hotsuma (Hozuma) and Asakura Fumio at the Tokyo University of Art. Settled in Nara, the ancient capital, he emerged as one of the foremost metalworkers of his generation, perpetuating the Edo-doki tradition into the early Showa period while incorporating elements of European Art Deco, reflecting both a respect for tradition and a spirit of innovation. His work was first recognized by the government-sponsored exhibitions, appearing in the ninth Teiten in 1928 and continued to exhibit extensively at the Teiten/Bunten National Exhibitions prior to the Second World War. After the war, his work appeared in the Nitten National Exhibition. Today, the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, holds two of his works, alongside holdings at the Metal Art Museum Hikarinotani.
