SUETAKO SEIHO: A BRONZE ‘SQUIRRELS AMID FRUITING GRAPEVINES’ TETSUBIN (TEA KETTLE) By Suetake Seiho, signed Seiho Japan, Heisei period (1989-2019) Finely cast, the globular body, with a sharply defined low waist, supported on a gently convex foot and rising through high-angled shoulders to a short, subtly waisted neck with a broad circular mouth, fitted with a slightly domed cover surmounted by a squirrel-form finial, and applied with a robust, crisply contoured spout and a distinctive arching handle with pierced sections to the grip. The exterior decorated in high relief with a pair of scenes depicting squirrels scampering among the branches of a luxuriant grapevine, with large leaves and pendent clusters of ripe grapes ready for harvest. Signed to the side SEIHO. WEIGHT 2,202 g HEIGHT 26.3 cm, WIDTH 24.3 cm Suetake Seiho (d. 2011) lived and worked in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture, where he developed his practice under the guidance of Ichihashi Gazan, a metal casting artist. Throughout his career, he participated in local exhibitions, receiving several awards in recognition of his work, and later exhibited with the Japan Art Crafts Association (Nihon Kogei Association), notably in 2002 and 2008.
