SHUZAN: A VERY LARGE BRONZE OKIMONO OF A TURTLE By Shuzan, signed Shuzan Japan, early 20th century, Meiji (1868-1912) to Taisho period (1912-1926) Naturalistically cast, the turtle is shown firmly poised on all four legs, its long, sinuous tail extending gracefully behind. The scaly skin is crisply articulated and covered by a broad, domed carapace, with the hexagonal scutes rendered in meticulous detail, matched by the carefully worked underside of the plastron. The head is gently raised, imbuing the animal with a calm, observant presence. Signed on the underside SHUZAN.
