MAKINO: A CHARMING TOKYO SCHOOL BRONZE OKIMONO OF A BOY LIFTING A DOG By the Makino workshop, sealed Makino kore o tsukuru Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) Heavily cast, the youthful boy standing upon a rocky outcrop beside a shallow pool, dressed in a loosely fitted haori, as he lifts a small dog with both hands in a playful gesture. The animal twists its body in resistance, raising its head to look back at the boy, creating a lively interaction between the two figures. Both faces are sensitively modeled with expressive features, while the boy’s hair and the dog’s fur are rendered with finely textured surfaces, demonstrating the artist’s attention to naturalistic detail. The figure is mounted on an irregular rock-form base, the underside sealed within a square reserve MAKINO kore o tsukuru [Makino made this].
