拍品描述

MAKINO: A CHARMING TOKYO SCHOOL BRONZE OKIMONO OF A BOY LIFTING A DOG By the Makino workshop, sealed Makino kore o tsukuru Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) Heavily cast, the youthful boy standing upon a rocky outcrop beside a shallow pool, dressed in a loosely fitted haori, as he lifts a small dog with both hands in a playful gesture. The animal twists its body in resistance, raising its head to look back at the boy, creating a lively interaction between the two figures. Both faces are sensitively modeled with expressive features, while the boy’s hair and the dog’s fur are rendered with finely textured surfaces, demonstrating the artist’s attention to naturalistic detail. The figure is mounted on an irregular rock-form base, the underside sealed within a square reserve MAKINO kore o tsukuru [Makino made this]. HEIGHT 38.4 cm WEIGHT 5.8 kg The name Makino appears on a group of finely cast Meiji-period Tokyo School bronzes, particularly figural compositions characterized by lively genre subjects, naturalistic modeling, and careful attention to surface detail. These works reflect the broader Tokyo bronze tradition of the late 19th century, when sculptors and metalworkers adapted traditional Japanese casting techniques to meet the demands of international exhibitions and a growing Western market for decorative bronzes. Although the biography of the artist remains largely undocumented, signed works by Makino demonstrate the high technical standards and refined naturalism associated with Meiji-period Tokyo bronze production. Auction comparison: Compare a closely related Tokyo school bronze group of a boy with three geese, by Makino, Meiji period, late 19th century, 72 cm high, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, London, 14 May 2015, lot 418 (mid-estimate at GBP 5,000 or approx. EUR 8,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
