拍品描述

Circa 2nd-1st centuries BC. Head of Perseus to right, wearing Phrygian cap / A-C, warrior (Perseus?) advancing to right, holding harpa(?) and shield. Unpublished type. 2.59gr, 14mm, 12h. Acquired on the European coin market. Property of a Kent, UK, gentleman. A new unrecorded type of the coinage of Astypalaia. Similar tiny bronze coins of Aspendos bear also A-C legend and depict an upright figure. However, the fact that this figure is not a slinger but a warrior and the resemblance of the head to that of Perseus of Astypalaian bronzes (cf. HGC 6, 1279), make us therefore attribute this coin to this island. Ιt is uncertain who exactly the figure represents, since several gods were worshipped on the island, as we learn from inscriptions that the ancient city contained many temples. TimeLine Auctions follows a rigorous vetting process to ensure the authenticity and legality of all items, reinforcing our commitment to integrity and responsible trading. Each antiquity, antique, and coin lot undergoes thorough examination by a vetting committee of at least ten external specialists, professional trade association members, scientists, and archaeologists. See our website for more information. Near Very Fine. Unpublished and possibly unique.
