CHINESE TERRACOTTA BRICK WITH SEATED BODHISATTVA

Northern Wei dynasty, Ca. AD 386 - 535. A terracotta rectangular brick moulded in relief with a seated bodhisattva within a recessed niche framed by a pointed arch. The figure is depicted with the hands held before the chest and seated cross-legged on a low platform, with a circular halo behind the head. Size: 310mm x 140mm; Weight: 3.44kg Provenance: East Anglian private collection; formerly acquired in the early 1990s in Hong Kong.
