Northern Wei dynasty, Ca. AD 386 - 534. A terracotta figure of a standing male court attendant. The head is rounded, with narrowed eyes beneath arched brows, a broad nose, and a small mouth, the hair gathered into a raised topknot. The figure wears baggy trousers and a layered court dress with a broad collar, a long outer robe with flowing sleeves, a short pleated apron below the hem, and a belted midsection. The hands are held at the front, one shown and the other concealed within the sleeve. The surface is decorated with polychrome, including red on the robe and orange pigment on the chest panel and pleated elements, with darker pigment on the hair.
