清中期 紫檀海水江崖龍紋長方盒 Of rectangular form, the cover exquisitely carved in deep relief with confronting dragons writhing amidst dense scrolling clouds, centered on a flaming pearl, the sides similarly decorated with continuous archaistic dragon bands above a key-fret border, the zitan wood of rich, dark tone with natural lustre. Mid-Qing Dynasty period. Height:3 in (7.6 cm)Length:11 in (27.9 cm)Width:6 3/4 in (17.1 cm) Provenance: From a private collection in Southern California, acquired in Japan in the early years. The box is carved in high relief with a dynamic composition of writhing dragons amidst swirling clouds, the design densely arranged yet clearly articulated in layered depth, exuding a powerful sense of movement. The overall carving is intricate and meticulously executed, with richly detailed decoration that remains orderly and refined, demonstrating the superb craftsmanship associated with Qing dynasty imperial or high-level workshop zitan carving.
