STUNNING SELJUK BRONZE BASIN WITH SPHINX AND INSCRIPTION

Ca. AD 1000 - 1200. A deep bronze basin with a broad, flaring rim above high sides and a wide, rounded base. The interior is decorated with a central roundel enclosing a sphinx, encircled by a band of naskh inscription. The rim is encircled by a further epigraphic frieze, divided by roundels filled with vegetal ornament. Size: 140mm x 440mm; Weight: 1.7kg Provenance: Property of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market since the 1970s.
