RARE APULIAN RED-FIGURE SKYPHOS WITH THESEUS AND ARIADNE

Ca. 400 - 300 BC. A red-figure skyphos with a deep, rounded bowl on a low moulded foot, the lip slightly everted, and a pair of horizontal handles attached at the shoulder. The tondo is stamped with a central rosette within a star motif, the points terminating in palmette finials, and the inner rim is painted with ivy tendrils and leaves. On the exterior, an ovolo band encircles the upper zone beneath the lip, with palmettes below and flanking the handles. Side A shows Theseus advancing towards Ariadne, seated and draped. Side B shows Theseus before a seated, winged Nike, who presents him with a wreath.
