RARE BYZANTINE BRONZE APPLIQU? WITH AN ANGEL HOLDING A MASK

Ca. AD 1000 - 1200. A bronze circular appliqu? with the obverse incised with a standing angel in frontal view, with a nimbus and long hair, holding a mask by the strap. A stylised foliate motif fills the field to the right, the ground punctuated by small circles, all within a narrow border. The reverse is plain. Size: 76mm x 78mm; Weight: 35g Provenance: From an old British collection formed in the 1990s; previously acquired in Holland.
