BYZANTINE BRONZE RELIQUARY CROSS

Ca. AD 1000 - 1200. A bronze reliquary cross formed of two cross-shaped halves joined by a hinge. The obverse shows Christ crucified, wearing a colobium, flanked by diminutive figures of the Virgin and Saint John, with a titulus above and two-line Greek inscriptions beneath each arm. The reverse shows the Virgin standing orant at the centre, with medallions at the terminals containing busts of the four Evangelists. For similar see: The British Museum, Museum number 1981,0202.1.
