MATCHED PAIR OF HELLENISTIC HIGH KARAT GOLD EROS EARRINGS WITH GARNET CABOCHONS

Ca. 300 - 200 BC. A matched pair of gold earrings, each with a plain, tapering hoop of round section and a circular cell set with a red stone cabochon at the front, above a relief Eros figure with spread wings and hands at the hips. A small loop fitting closes the hoop behind. Size: 21-22mm x 20-22mm; Weight: 3.9g Provenance: Private London collection; previously part of a distinguished New York private collection, assembled between 1975 and 1995. The collection was authenticated in the early 1990s by Dr. Jack Ogden and Barbara Deppert Lippitz, leading specialists in ancient jewellery. A significant number of objects from this collection were also published in a professional catalogue.
