ETRUSCO-CORINTHIAN OLPE WITH GEOMETRIC DECORATION BY THE GROUP OF PHOENICIAN PALMETTES

Ca. 580 - 560 BC. A terracotta olpe with a flaring mouth and thickened rim above a tall neck, a single strap handle with rotelles, and a pear-shaped body on a low ring foot. The decoration is arranged in horizontal registers, with incised tongues at the shoulder, a palmette chain around the body, and concentric half-circles at the base. Size: 285mm x 160mm; Weight: 990g Provenance: Private Australian Collection; formerly in the collection of Dr Howard Sirak, Columbus, Ohio; from the collection of Mr Ulfert Wilke, founding Director of the University of Iowa Museum of Art. This piece is one of a large number that Dr Sirak purchased from Mr Wilke. Dr Sirak from Ulfert ' Ol Pe Acquired by Wilke on 29 May 1968; provenance notes from Dr 1 300 'E ' Sirak suggest that Mr Wilke acquired the olpe from a merchant in Rome sometime between 1950 and 1960; or it may liave been acquired from [artefact merchant Gorgio] Fallani in Rome in 1959. The "merchant in Rome" may indeed refer to Fallani. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. Published in de Puma, Etruscan and Villanovan Pottery: A Catalogue of Italian Ceramics from Midwestern Collections, no. 47; cited as no. 3.5 from the Sirak Collection (numbered prior to De Puma appraisal).
