APULIAN RED-FIGURE SQUAT LEKYTHOS WITH YOUNG DIONYSUS AND MAENAD

Ca. 350 - 300 BC. A squat lekythos with a tall flaring trumpet mouth, a short cylindrical neck, and an ovoid body tapering to a moulded foot. The single strap handle rises from the shoulder to the neck with closely spaced vertical lines, the shoulder with an ovolo band. The body with a red-figure scene of youthful Dionysus seated to the left, nude to the waist with a mantle drawn over the legs, holding a wreath in the right hand and a thyrsos in the left with a taenia attached, approached by a maenad advancing from right in a long chiton and himation, holding a kantharos in the right hand and a tympanon in the left, the field framed by scrolling tendrils with a large palmette between.
