APULIAN RED-FIGURE AMPHORA WITH HERMAPHRODITE

Ca. 350 BC. A red-figure amphora with a flaring disc mouth, a tall neck, and a compressed ovoid body on a stem and spreading foot, with a pair of vertical handles rising from the shoulder to the rim. The neck is painted with a large palmette, and the shoulder with a band of running waves. The body is decorated with two panel scenes framed by palmettes at the sides: Side A with a hermaphrodite with hair bound, extending a taenia, with hanging discs in the field. Side B with a woman in a long belted chiton, holding a taenia in each hand, with a disc to either side. For similar see: F. Coarelli, I romani in Sicilia e nel sud Italia, Magnus Editore, p. 48.
