Ca. AD 200. A schist figure of the Bodhisattva Maitreya, shown seated on a rectangular plinth with drapery. The figure sits cross-legged with the hands held before the body in dhy_na mudr_, the gesture of meditation. A circular halo rises behind the head. The face is modelled with heavy-lidded eyes and a small mouth, framed by long hair falling to the shoulders, and surmounted by an elaborate headdress. The Bodhisattva wears a draped sanghati, with a beaded necklace and armlets, and bracelets at the wrists. Size: 620mm x 420mm; 48.94kg Provenance: From the collection of a London gentleman; formerly acquired in the early 2000s in Japan; previously in a 1970s Japanese collection. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
