Ca. AD 200 - 400. A carved alabaster monopodium leg, set on a rectangular plinth and carved with a paw modelled in the round with splayed toes and incised claws. A single leg rises from the paw, carved with a sprouting acanthus, from which the forequarters and head of a lion emerge. The head is carved with large eyes, a muzzle with whisker markings, open jaws, and prominent teeth and fangs. The reverse is cut flat with an attachment panel and drilled fixing holes. Size: 460mm x 160mm; Weight: 11kg Provenance: Property of an Oxfordshire art professional; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1970s on the Canadian art market.
