EASTERN ROMAN EMPIRE ALABASTER LION MONOPODIUM TABLE LEG

Ca. AD 200 - 400. A carved alabaster monopodium leg, set on a rectangular plinth and carved with a paw modelled in the round with splayed toes and incised claws. A single leg rises from the paw, carved with a sprouting acanthus, from which the forequarters and head of a lion emerge. The head is carved with large eyes, a muzzle with whisker markings, open jaws, and prominent teeth and fangs. The reverse is cut flat with an attachment panel and drilled fixing holes.
