Painted with an Imperial poem, fanggu mark, dated 1776, with a boy and chickens amongst peony and rockwork, six-character seal mark in underglaze-blue Diameter 15cm The poem written on this bowl was composed by the Qianlong emperor in 1776. It names the boy as Jia Chang (b.713), a child prodigy that was trained from the age of thirteen to fight cockerels for the Xuanzong emperor (713-56). The boy is depicted as being alert and standing on his tiptoes, which forms the rebus 'qiao zu er dai', which means to expect something to happen soon Provenance: Edward 'Ted' Wrangham Collection, O.B.E., (1928-2009) TO BE SOLD WITHOUT RESERVE
