Ca. AD 100 - 200. A finely carved marble foot fragment, rendered with considerable anatomical sensitivity, the slender toes articulated with naturalistic separation and delicately defined nail beds. The soft rise of the instep and the softly swelling arch convey a studied understanding of weight distribution and organic form. The ankle is modelled with quite precision, the malleoli delicately suggested beneath taut skin, while faint transitions across the dorsal surface evoke the underlying tendons. The overall treatment balances idealisation and observation, imparting a refined monumentality to this surviving element of a larger sculptural whole. For similar see: A.
