STUNNING LATE ROMAN SILVER-GILT SKYPHOS WITH VINE LEAVES MOTIF

Ca. AD 300 - 500. A silver-gilt skyphos on a low spreading foot, the body rising from a short stem to a flared rim with a beaded band below the lip. Two opposed bifurcated handles are applied to the upper body, each formed as a split loop with rounded terminals and pellet finials. The exterior is decorated with an engraved vine scroll with tendrils and clusters, interspersed with gilt vine leaves. For similar shape see: The British Museum, Museum number 1999,0426.1.
