MEDIEVAL FRENCH LIMOGES ENAMELLED GILT-BRONZE PROCESSIONAL CRUCIFIX WITH CHRIST, EVANGELISTS AND GEM

Ca. AD 1100 - 1200. A gilt-bronze processional cross. The main face is centred by a cast, champlev?-enamelled figure of the crucified Christ, wearing a short perizoma and a crown, the terminals fitted with champlev?-enamelled figures of the Evangelists. The field is engraved with cross-shaped motifs and inlaid with circular and oval gem settings arranged along the arms. The reverse is centred on a circular champlev?-enamel medallion with a haloed figure of Christ, the right hand raised in blessing and the left holding a book. A riveted rectangular plaque with the IHS monogram sits above the medallion. Riveted lozenges with enamelled quatrefoils occupy the side arms, with two further lozenges below the medallion. The field is enriched with punched rosettes, and the terminals are fitted with additional champlev?-enamel panels. Mounted on a socket with a moulded knop, on a wooden base.
