LATE ROMAN LEGIONARY HELMET WITH CHEEKPIECES

Ca. AD 300 - 500. A legionary helmet with a hemispherical bowl formed of riveted plates. The crown is secured by a broad central reinforcing strip set front to back and fastened with domed rivets. A separate brow band encircles the lower edge, with riveted joins and a rear neck guard plate. A pair of hinged cheekpieces is suspended from rolled knuckles at the temples.
